WHERE IT ALL BEGAN
Accessible only by boat, in a seaside cottage nestled on the small island of Daufuskie, an idea began in 2009. Inspired by the island’s character and natural beauty, company founder and CEO, Kay Stanley, imagined how linen and leather could marry with colorful patterns and timeless island stories. That thought became a beautifully coordinated handbag collection beloved by women everywhere.
Oh, how that idea grew. Spartina 449 is now internationally known and featured in specialty retail shops across the country. They also offer an evolving array of products that continue to be inspired by the small, flavorful island we call home.
WHAT'S IN A NAME
The company name originates from the lush, green cordgrass that flourishes in the saltwater marshes along the Carolina coast. Its Latin name? Spartina alterniflora. And the number 449? Well, it’s the address of that cozy cottage on Daufuskie Island where the Lowcountry landscapes and creaky floorboards helped bring a novel handbag company to life.
Carry a Spartina 449 bag, and you’re carrying history on your arm. Their pattern names—like Pender, Callahan, Mary Lavinia, Stoddard, Bateau Bleu and 1715—are each inspired by the island’s history. Travel! Romance! Mystery! You’ll discover fascinating tales woven into every pattern.
THE SPARTINA MERMAID
Captivating colors, irresistible style—it was only natural that a mermaid became their insignia! The Spartina 449 mermaid is inspired by tales of sailors who, after a night of indulging in island spirits, gazed into the moonlit ocean, convinced they saw mermaids swimming nearby. More than likely, they were actually swooning over local dolphins!
For them, however, the legend is real. They incorporate an authentic Spartina mermaid into every product either as the logo charm, as a separate charm, or on the inside pocket.
The fabric that graces every Spartina 449 handbag follows the same linen tradition that began over 30,000 years ago with ancient Egyptians. It’s the same technique that has evolved into today’s French and Belgian linens, woven by specially commissioned artisans who create Spartina’s intricate signature weaves.
More durable than commonly used cotton, the exterior linen on Spartina’s handbags is additionally protected with a water and stain resistant coating. Combine this with Spartina’s eco-friendly, water-based inks, and the result is a faithfully crafted and luxurious line of stylish linen handbags and accessories.
THEIR CAROLINA CAUSE
Spartina 449 donates a portion of its proceeds to the Daufuskie Island Historical Foundation, a non-profit organization dedicated to education, scientific discovery and charity for the purpose of the preservation of the cultural heritage of Daufuskie.
